Movies 4 Mental Health, Jackson County 5/18/2019
In cooperation with Southern Oregon University, Rogue Community College, and Art With Impact, NAMI Southern Oregon is offering two free showings of mental health film shorts this year - in both Ashland and Grants Pass!
Films will be provided by San Francisco-based, Art With Impact, who will also provide facilitated, interactive introductory discussion. This discussion will open direct and contained conversation about mental illness, mental wellness, stigma, and the media’s role in our perceptions.
In between the films will be break-out sessions, with the facilitator establishing the guiding framework for watching, internalizing and discussing the films, involving both cognitive and emotional exploration. By dividing audience responses into thoughts and feelings we will implicitly teach that these ways of experiencing the world are different and yet equally valid.
Following the films will be a panel of university students who will share their lived-experiences with - and triumphs over - mental health conditions. These students are exceptional. They are dedicated to helping others avoid the difficult things they have endured, and you will leave inspired by their eloquence and bravery!
We will also feature Resource Panelists, exploring treatment options in our area. Bios and pics of panelists - both Student and Resource - will be posted on our Facebook page. Like last year's event, audience members can participate with the Q&A period.
At both events, attendees can delve into more details of our area's specific offerings during the Mental Health Resource Fair, while enjoying live music and a silent auction to benefit NAMI's year-round mission: we are dedicated to using education, advocacy and support to improve the lives of those impacted by mental health conditions. You can preview some of our many auction items on our Facebook page here. We have everything from a rafting trip to a Stay-Cation and local art, wine and jewelry. Refreshments and parking will be provided, as will a sign language interpreter.
Another improvement this year is that tickets are free, with a suggested donation. You can reserve your free tickets and make a donation to support NAMI here.
